FAQ's

What is National Junior Honor Society?
National Junior Honor Society was created in 1929 "to recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, service, citizenship and character remain as relevant today as they were in 1929."

How do I know if I'm eligible for NJHS?
6th and 7th grade students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher at the end of the first semester will receive an invitation to apply for membership.

Where can I go for more information about NJHS?
  1. Read through the by-laws for the Crossroads Chapter of NJHS on the Documents Page following the link to the right.
  2. Scroll down to read frequently asked questions!
  3. Contact the Crossroads Chapter NJHS Adviser following the links on the right.
  4. Additional information can be found at the NJHS national website, Parent Zone.
Must I fill out every section of the Candidate Form?
To be considered for membership all sections of the Candidate Form as well as two teacher evaluation forms must be complete. If you have any questions please contact the Chapter Adviser, Kathy Vogel at kvogel@nvps.net.

Is it okay if my Mom or Dad helps me with my Candidate Form?
Of course, NJHS encourages parental support. However, it is the candidate's responsibility to fill in all information on the form in his or her own handwriting, to seek out signatures of adult supervisors and to submit paperwork on time.

Which email address should I use on the application? Please use an NVPS email address. We prefer that students have a separate email address from parents as this will be used for signing up for volunteer experiences on Signupgenius.com. It is confusing when it is the parent's name which shows up.

What if I can't get a signature?
Every reasonable effort must be made to obtain signatures where required. If this is not possible, please include an explanation and accurate contact information for the supervising adult. Even if this information is supplied, if the supervisor is not available to verify the experience on the selection day, the application will be considered incomplete.

May my parents sign my application to verify experience?
As is the case with the High School Honor Society, parents may not sign for the adult supervisor. In the case where a parent also serves as teacher, coach or group leader, an assistant or organization supervisor may sign to verify this experience.

How do I know if an experience fits under the leadership, service or other school activities category?
If you're not sure where to list certain experiences email the Faculty Adviser who can guide you in placing your experiences in the most accurate section on the Candidate Form.

Is Student of the Month or Citizen of the Month a leadership position?
Yes, because you have been selected by an adult at your school for your leadership qualities, this honor may serve as an example of leadership on your application.

Is Honor Roll a Leadership position?
We suggest that you use your honor roll status as an example of an award you have earned. Because it is based on your academic achievement it is not a position for which you were elected or chosen by others.

What happens if I forget to sign my Candidate Form?
A Candidate Form which is missing an applicant signature or signatures from supervising adults are incomplete and will not be included in the applicant pool reviewed by the Faculty Council.

What if I miss the deadline to submit my Candidate Form?
Candidates are given ample time to complete all the necessary sections of the Candidate Form. No late applications will be accepted. This is the policy of the National Organization as well as the Crossroads Chapter. "Meeting deadlines is a reflection of a student's level of responsibility which is one aspect of character," one of the five pillars of the NJHS.

What constitutes a complete application?
Every section of the application marked "required" must be filled out with all requested information. We STRONGLY suggest that you exceed the minimum requirements in each section. This serve as insurance in case one or more experiences are deemed unverifiable or inadequate by the Faculty Council.

Is it okay to turn in the Teacher Recommendation form separately from the application?
Yes, the two recommendation forms must be submitted from your teacher to the advisor separately.  Simply note on your completed packet which teachers you requested a letter of recommendation. Please start early on this process to allow ample time for teachers to return these to you.

What happens if my application is incomplete?
Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the Faculty Council. No exceptions.

How are members chosen for NJHS?
Candidates are first selected on the basis of GPA which must be 3.75 or higher to qualify. Candidate Forms are reviewed by a five member Faculty Committee which carefully considers all information provided. Each member is selected by a majority vote of the Faculty Committee. The faculty at large is invited to share concerns regarding the candidates based on the five pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Finally, school records are examined to ensure that each candidate has an exemplary record of behavior.

I wasn't selected for membership in NJHS. What can I do now?
First and foremost, you and your parents should be proud of your strong academic record. Next, remember if you keep up the good work you may have additional opportunities to become a member of NJHS. If you're unclear on why you were not selected, contact the Faculty Adviser within the published dates for application feedback. Understanding your non-selection will help you prepare for the future opportunities!

How and when will I find out if I am accepted into NJHS?
Candidates will be contacted following the review process in the spring.

What happens once I'm accepted into NJHS?
Before you become an official member of NJHS you must be inducted by current members in a special ceremony held in October. You and your family will receive an evite in late August with all the information.

What responsibilities do I have as an NJHS member?
Members have several important responsibilities:
Honor and model the Five Pillars of the National Junior Honor Society: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship in the following ways:
  1. Once selected, maintain a minimum 3.75 GPA.
  2. Serve as a model of good behavior for peers.
  3. Complete required group and independent service hours.

I got sent to SRC. Will I be dismissed from NJHS?
Members may occasionally fall below the standards of NJHS. This does not necessarily lead to dismissal. However, the Faculty Council may institute disciplinary measures such as suspend chapter privileges, remove a student from office or request that a student perform additional school or community service.

Do I need to reapply for NJHS every year?
