A Few Helping Hands Needed!

Hi Everyone! What a great meeting we had this morning. Our Officers are doing a fabulous job keeping us organized. Thank you to the families that are feeding us well! Yogurt, bananas, oranges, cheese sticks, juice - what a nutritious and delicious breakfast!

In addition to member's reports on their service work, President Makayla invited members to form a sub-committee to meet during Advisory a few times to brain storm some fund raising activities for the spring. This will enable us to continue our holiday baskets tradition for years to come!

Speaking of our holiday baskets, a few more helping hands are needed. The storage room where we will collect food and items for the baskets is currently housing a lot of wood which needs to be moved. Do you have muscle? Come on Thursday after school and help us!

NJHS Has a Blast at the 11 annual Mayor's Grand River Clean-Up!

Officers, Jessica and Makayla clean up!
After an early morning light rain passed through, NJHS members and their families enjoyed sunny weather along the Grand River. We rode a bus to a trail head near 5/3 Ball Park where we filled numerous bags with trash! What a great effort to clean up the trail enjoyed by so many. Thank you NJHS members for serving as great role models and pitching in to help out!
Many members brought their families along for the fun!

Marnie and Corinn enjoy lunch after a morning of hard work!

Mayor's Grand River Clean Up This Saturday!

Hi Everyone,
We've had a great response to the Mayor's Grand River Clean Up this Saturday, September 20th. I've hear from many of you that you are signed up. Hurray! It should be a fun day! I will forward parking information via email as well as an update to this site as soon as I receive it from the event organizers.

I have permission slips aka minor waiver forms (also available on the site. Click on this link and scroll all the way to the bottom: http://grandrivercleanup.com/register/ available in the art room for any members who are attending without parents which is just fine as I will be there all morning! I'd like ALL attending members to sign a form and return to me by this Friday, so that I know who to look for at the parking lot! We will meet up at our assigned bus (remember, we are partnering with Trinity UMC.) The bus will then transport our group to the clean up sight to which we are assigned.

A quick word about service hours log sheets: These are in the NJHS office, next to the art room, members may stop by during Advisory to obtain a log form. Members are responsible for keeping track of their own hours. For a group project such as the Clean-Up day, I am the supervisor who will sign the form, so that's easy!

One Hundred Lunch Bags for KFB!

The art room was abuzz with activity last night as NJHS members decorated One Hundred lunch sacks for Kids Food Basket. Blue dinosaurs, flowers and riddles are just some of the designs which will brighten a child's day along with a full sack of supper! Thank you all who joined us!

Group Service Opportunities Announcement!

Hi Everyone,
I have two fun Honor Society Group Service Opportunities. I hope to see many of you participate. Here they are:

1. Next Tuesday, September 16th, from 2:30 - 4:00, in the art room we will be decorating Kids Food Basket brown bags for their supper program. The late bus is available to take in-district students home.

2. Mayor's Grand River Clean-up. Crossroads NJHS will be partnering with Trinity UMC for this service event. I will be there and hope to see you too! Here is the info and link for signing up. Although we are signing up on the Trinity group (please read directions below carefully) you will receive NJHS group service hours for participation.

*Please indicate that you are volunteering with Trinity UMC and that your site leader is the UMC youth leader, Chelsea Smith!

Here are the important details and information about the event:
  • The clean up involves 5 different communities, 40 miles of the Grand River and roughly 1,000 volunteers! This is one of the top 5 largest river clean ups in the nation.
  • Last year, 700 volunteers picked up 12,000 pounds of trash!
  • Wear long pants as there is poison ivy in some areas along the river.
  • We're cleaning up the river in rain or shine! It will be fun!
  • Meet at 6th Street Park in downtown GR. We'll be taking buses to our work site from there. This is a city event, so plan for city parking. There is street parking available and the meters are free on weekends.
  • Free lunch afterwards. Yum! GR Pizza and Founders Brewing Co. have graciously sponsored the event.
  • Registration begins at 8:30am. Yes, we'll have coffee! Clean up begins shortly after this.
I think that's all for now. WMEAC will be sending out a huge email full of details at some point next week, too. If you're registered in advance, you should get it. If you don't get it, please don't hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, or concerns.

Hope to see you all there!

Come get messy, Join us on the 25th!

There are still lots of sign up slots available for students to help with the Back-to-School display during the 7:30-10am time slot - if you can't come for the whole time, just add a comment in the sign up telling when you will be there. We also have a need for a parent or two to help supervise. Don't be intimidated by the ART part of this project. It is messy, but you will have fun!

We are creating about 10, large, cloth banners with the message:
YOU ARE MORE...(inspired by the popular song) Followed by words that speak to looking past the external ways we are expected to "measure up" such as  GPA, Height, or Facebook Friends list. You Are More Than Your Shoe Size, would be an example. Our back-to-school message is to look past the external attributes of a person to see the wonderful individual inside.

We will be using a variety of materials, including permanent cloth dye (I have aprons and rubber gloves), spray paint and lots of alphabet sets donated by Mrs. Menhart (Thank You!) So, Students sign up at the Genius and come help us spread this important message! Parents, here's your Signup Genius link.

8/11/2014

You have Signed Up!

What a great turn out we've had on both the student signupgenius for August 25th as well as the Parent Volunteer for the year signupgenius!

If you see something you'd like to be part of but the slots are all full, do not despair! Just send me an email and I will either add a slot or create another task. There is always plenty of help needed! Also, if you have ideas for service at our school or in our community send me an email!
See you soon!

Service for Students and Parents, Too!

Wow! Our Service & Social Day is bound to be a huge success. Almost every signup slot on signupgenius is full! I can't wait to see new and returning NJHS student members on August 25!

Now it's the parents' turn! There are lots of fun service ops, both small and large, for you grown ups to help support all that NJHS does for the Northview Community. Some opportunities are a one shot deal, half an hour, others are year-long. There's something for everyone! So, go to the NJHS parent volunteer signup genius and sign up!

It's Never Too Early for Service!

I've had quite a few emails regarding service hours over the summer. It's never to early to start logging hours toward your 2014/ 2015 commitment of eight independent hours. NJHS encourages service done for community organizations (rather than helping to cut Grandma's lawn - which you should also do!) NJHS also suggests that you choose activities and organizations about which you are passionate. This is an opportunity to develop interests and learn new skills. Just remember to log your hours on the Service Hours Log form and get the organization supervisor's signature!

Summer Volunteer Opportunity!

Special thanks to Member parent, Grace Kneeshaw, for presenting this fun volunteer opportunity:
The Non-profit park, Northville Park, (2800 Leelanau NE) is having a work day to clean up their tennis courts this Saturday,  July 26, from 9am  to 12pm. Bring a lunch and stay after for some time in the pool as guests of Crossroads NJHS member Justin Kneeshaw!

If you have any questions please call Grace Kneeshaw @ 363-9094

NJHS Announces New Members!

Established in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) seeks to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. These five characteristics or "pillars" have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1929.

The Crossroads chapter of NJHS is pleased to announce the selection of 49 new members for the 2014-2015 school year. These students qualified to apply to NJHS by earning a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Following this impressive academic achievement candidates underwent a rigorous selection process in which they were asked to demonstrate significant accomplishments in the areas of leadership, service, character and citizenship. But the hard work doesn’t end there!

Once selected for NJHS membership, these young adults are called upon to serve as leaders of the school and models in the community. Members will complete a minimum of eight hours of individual service in a personal area of interest over the course of the next year. In addition, members will complete an additional eight hours of group service while leading and participating in several school based service projects.

New members will be inducted at a special ceremony at the Max Colley Jr. Performing Arts Center on October 7, 2014 at 7pm. This new group of members brings the Crossroads Chapter membership count to a whopping seventy students! Way to go Northview!
