Reserve Job Shadow Day

As part of J-Term students will learn about various careers and jobs on January 12.  We are proud to partner with Junior Achievement and local community members to highlight potential careers and jobs.  

We need NJHS volunteers to help make our guests feel welcome.  There are several volunteer opportunities.  All volunteers must dress "business" casual.  In essence, look nice.  Email Mrs. Vogel by January 8th if you are interested in helping.  

You must attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 10th during the Seminar.  Meet Mrs. Templar in the cafeteria.  Be sure to check in with your Seminar teacher before coming to the meeting.

Shoeboxes for the Homeless

 



We are putting together items collected for Mel Trotter Ministries Shoeboxes on Thursday, December 14th from 2:40-3:30 in room 203.  We are still in need of items specifically hats, gloves, and socks.  Please consider helping.

Suggested Items:

Small toiletries: shampoo, deodorant, lotion, soap, toothpaste (note - travel sizes from hotels are perfect)

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Chapstick

Wet Wipes

Washcloth

Small disposable razors

Small combs

Refillable/collapsible water bottles

Small emergency/first aid kits (Band-Aids, Individual doses of Bactine, Neosporin, etc)

Small sewing kids

Small blankets

Socks

Hats 

Gloves

Hand warmer packets 

Gift cards for fast food 

Non-perishable food in individual servings such as: 

• peanut butter • crackers, • nuts • cheese and cracker packages • cookies • dried fruit • tuna • power/breakfast bars

Join in on the fun on December 19th from 7:40-2:30.  Stop by Mrs. Vogel or Ms. LaGrow's room to grab a peppermint.  Try to collect as many peppermints from other NJHS members throughout the day without 
disrupting the learning environment which includes being late for class.   See rules above.

Winter Cookie Exchange

Enjoy baking?  Love cookies?  Need a snack to leave Santa?  Participate in our Winter Cookie Exchange on December 7th  at our morning meeting.   Bring a dozen cookies.  Leave with 12 new cookies.  RSVP to Sophia Hall by December 6th if you plan to participate.  Please include two cards that contain the ingredients.

Jive Turkey

 



Will Mr. Retherford be our Jive Turkey?

Help support our service project - Shoeboxes for the Homeless.  Purchase feathers for $1.00 during lunch the November 6th to November 17th.  The teacher who has the most feathers will be crowned our Jive Turkey and dress as a turkey on November 21.  

Please consider signing up to sell feathers at lunch.  Email Mrs. Vogel. Be sure to include which lunch you have.  






November Service Project: Shoeboxes for the Homeless

 



We plan to give back to an important organization in our community, Mel Trotter Ministries.  Mel Trotter Ministries helps the homeless people who are in need.  One small way we can help is to create shoeboxes.  Let’s work together to fill 50 shoeboxes for Mel Trotter’s Homeless Shelter.   You may make a monetary donation or bring in supplies.  You may bring in items or money to Mrs. Vogel.  We will work on shoeboxes at our November meeting and after school. Shoeboxes will be delivered in the last week of November.

NJHS Butterbraid Pastries Fundraiser

 


National Junior Honor Society

Our NJHS team has the opportunity to sell Butterbraids Pastries in order to help offset the cost of several things:

NJHS shirts
Service Projects (Mel Trotter Shoeboxes, Bus Driver Gratitude Breakfast, etc)
NJHS Celebrations (Robinettes, Ice-Skating, etc)
8th Grade Farewell

We are hoping you will consider helping us.  Students who sell five or more items will receive their NJHS t-shirt.  Butterbraid Pastries are delicious!  Just ask Mr. Otten.  Each pastry is $16.00.  Make checks payable to Northview Crossroads Middle School.

NJHS Fall Celebration

Enjoy good times with good friends. National Junior Honor Society members are invited to an outing at Robinette’s Apple Orchard on Thursday, October 26th from 2:45-4:15.  We will go through the corn maze and enjoy cider and donuts. Be sure to dress for the weather. If there is inclement weather, we will stay at school for a movie.  The cost of the trip will be offset by our Butterbraids Fundraiser.   Permission slips are due October 24th.

Are you looking for ways to be more involved in NJHS?  Consider serving on one of our planning committees.  This fall our first service project is working with Meals on Wheels West Michigan.  This organization helps senior citizens in West Michigan.  We are always working to build Northview Spirit by planning a Homecoming Pep Rally.

East Oakview Childcare Volunteers

 



East Oakview PTC

Volunteers are one of the most important pieces of Northview Public Schools.  East Oakview's PTC is instrumental in providing enriching activities for students, parents, and teachers.  They need our help.  Please consider volunteering to provide childcare during the PTC meeting(s) on the following dates:

Kids Food Basket Brown Bag Challenge

 



Kids Food Basket



Add a touch of love to our Sack Suppers this September! Sack Suppers are a nutritious, ready-to-eat meal delivered right to a child’s school or distribution site, ensuring children have access to the healthy food they need to thrive.

What you’ll need:

  • Brown or white 6 or 8 lb. or size extra-large paper sacks work best. 
  • Crayons or markers. 
  • Refrain from using paint, glitter, feathers or stickers, as they can come off in the food. 
  • Please keep in mind that many Sack Suppers will be going to public schools and therefore cannot contain religious messages. 

Brown Bag Decorating Day Pop-Up Event

Join local artists, community leaders, and volunteers as we transform Sack Supper bags into joyous works of art for West Michigan children! Local food vendors will be on-site to fuel your creativity! Light refreshments will also be provided.

Where: Kids’ Food Basket – Kent County (1300 Plymouth Ave. NE, Grand Rapids)

When: 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Details:

  • Weeknight Shifts are 5:30 - 7:30

  • Weekend Shift are 8:30 - 10:30 and 10:30 - 12:00

  • Workers are allowed 1 meal per shift. This consists of a hot dog or slice of pizza, chips or candy, and a drink!

  • If you are unable to make the shift you have signed up for, please try to send someone in your place or trade with another volunteer. If you need help to facilitate this, or it is a last-minute need to cancel, please text Emily (616-295-5656) or Kari (616-890-7795) as soon as possible. 

  • For safety and health reasons nobody under 13 can be in the stand at any time.  * NJHS members who are 12 years old, may be permitted.

Help Our Recycle Queen

Mrs. Krueger organized a recycling day specifically for styrofoam on June 3 from 10:00 to 2:00 at Crossroads.  She needs three to five NJHS members to help her.  Email Mrs. Vogel if you are able to help. 

Please encourage friends and family to drop off their styrofoam.

Our monthly meeting for Thursday, April 13th has been rescheduled due to testing.  It has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 20th at 7:00 am.

Seventh graders who are interested in being part of the NJHS Leadership Team should consider one of the leadership positions.  Applications are due April 28th by 3:00 pm.  Interviews will be the week of May 1st-May 5th.  

PRESIDENT

-Elected for a one-year term.

-Must be an eighth grader.

-Must work with officers and faculty advisor one morning per week for planning purposes.

-Must attend and conduct the fall Induction Ceremony; failure to do so will result in the loss of the office of President.

-Runs all NJHS meetings.

-Responsible for Society as a whole.

-Chairs or co-chairs one of the NJHS committees and must fulfill the project requirements   

               for this committee.

-Must truly care about the direction and progress of the Society; must promote growth as 

 well as change when necessary.

-Must be an innovator and leader.

-Must meet with and coordinate other officers and oversee all committee work.

-Responsible for insuring that the department heads are executing their responsibilities.

-Must take the oath of office at the first meeting in May.  


VICE PRESIDENT

-Elected for a one-year term.

-Must be an eighth grader.

-Must work with officers and faculty advisor one morning per week for planning purposes.

-Must attend and participate in the fall Induction Ceremony; failure to do so will result 

  in the loss of the office of Vice President.

-Work with the President to run the NJHS meetings and run the meeting in the absence of     

the President.

-Chairs or co-chairs one of the NJHS committees and must fulfill the project requirements   

    for this committee.

-Must meet with and coordinate other officers and oversee all committee work

-Assist with communications (when needed).

-Must truly care about the direction and progress of the Society; must promote growth as 

  well as change when necessary.

- Must take the oath of office at the first meeting in May.

SECRETARY (1)

-Elected for a one-year term.

-Must be an eighth grader..

-Must work with officers and faculty advisor one morning per week for planning purposes.

-Must attend and participate in the fall Induction Ceremony; failure to do so will result 

 in the loss of the office of Secretary.

-Chairs or co-chairs one of the NJHS committees and must fulfill the project requirements   

     for this committee.

- Will take notes (“minutes”) of every meeting and catalogs the events;    

   gives a copy of the minutes to the advisor within one week of the meetings.

-Will handle social media communications.  ie; Facebook, Instagram, Remind, Blog, email, text, etc.

-Takes and records attendance at all meetings; have absentees come to him/her in order 

   to determine whether the absence is excused or unexcused; gives a copy of this list to the 

   advisor immediately following the meetings.

-Must take the oath of office at the first meeting in May. 

Historian and Media  (1)

-Elected for a one-year term.

-Must be an eighth grader.

-Must work with officers and faculty advisor one morning per week for planning purposes.

-Must attend and participate in the fall Induction Ceremony; failure to do so will result 

    in the loss of the office of Historian.

-Chairs or co-chairs one of the NJHS committees and must fulfill the project requirements   

              for this committee.

- Will take help updating the blog and make a slide show for the end-of-year celebration. 

-Will assist with social media communications.  ie; Facebook, Instagram, Remind, Blog, etc.

-Must take the oath of office at the first meeting in May. 


Event Coordinator (2)

-Elected for a one-year term.

-Must be an eighth grader.

-Must work with officers and faculty advisor one morning per week for planning purposes.

-Must attend and participate in the fall Induction Ceremony; failure to do so will result 

    in the loss of the office of Historian.

-Chairs or co-chairs one of the NJHS committees and must fulfill the project requirements   

   for this committee.

- Will take help meet with the advisor and help prepare a yearly calendar.

-Will ensure all members are involved with the planning of at least one event.  -Must take the oath of office at the first meeting in May.
